Spirit
5 Major Acts of the Spirit
God is Spirit and He fulfills roles, relationship and responsibility towards us by His Spirit’s presence and power. The Spirit acts in 5 major ways: God’s Doing, God’s Dwelling, God’s Disclosing, God’s Development and God’s Direction:
1. God’s Spirit Does (Action)
- In Creation
- In Jesus life from birth
- At Jesus baptism (Acts 10:38, Luke 3:21, 22)Jesus sent out His disciples with the same power and authority; John 14:12 – “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father.”
- In Jesus’ ministry (Luke 4:1, 4, 14, 18) full of the Holy Spirit
- led by the Spirit
- used the Sword of the Spirit
- in the power of the Spirit
- with the Spirit of the Lord upon Him
- On the Church – Pentecost (Acts 1:8, 2:1…)
- The Church operates in the demonstration of God’s power! Gifts of the Spirit, Fruit of the Spirit
- We are no different! We need God’s Power in our hearts and lives
- In Jesus’ ministry (Luke 4:1, 4, 14, 18) full of the Holy Spirit
2. God’s Spirit Dwells (Presence)
- God longs for a people to be distinguished by His Presence!
- With Moses, God dwelt among them in a Tabernacle
- With Solomon, God dwelled in the Temple
- Jesus is Immanuel – God with us! (John 1:14)
- Jesus: “I am going but… “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.” (John 14:18)
- After Jesus had risen and ascended to Heaven’s Throne, He poured out His Spirit into the lives of those washed in His blood.
- At Pentecost, the Spirit takes up residence in his end-time temple: the people of God!Every believer is indwelt by the Spirit, there is also an additional experience of being filled (baptized) in the Spirit for power and witness!
3. God’s Spirit Declares, Divulges, Displays, Discloses (Revelation)
“ 13When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all the truth, for He will not speak on his own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak, and He will declare to you the things that are to come.” John 16:12 – 15
- Jesus taught the Words of life.
- The Holy Spirit remind us and reveals to us the words of Jesus
- We have the scriptures today because of this promise to the apostles!
- Without the Spirit we cannot know Jesus or understand His Word.
Four things the Spirit does in order to Declare God’s word: 1 Corinthians 2:4 – 16
- Investigation – The Searching Spirit: He knows God’s thoughts.
- Revelation – the Revealing Spirit: He wants to make them known.
- Inspiration – The Inspiring Spirit: He imparts these through us.
- Illumination – The Enlightening Spirit: In order for others to see!
4. God’s Spirit Develops Christ in us (Transformation)
“ 17Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.18And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.” 2 Corinthians 3:17 – 18
- Becoming more like Jesus!
- The Holy Spirit Assures and Convinces: (John 16:7 – 11)
- Sin – He helps us turn from sin (Repentance) to Jesus (Faith).
- Righteousness – The Father has accepted Jesus’ righteous sacrifice as payment for all our unrighteousness. We are therefore righteous in Him before the Father.
- Judgement – no condemnation for those in Christ and the enemy is defeated! He is pouring out His wrath on the devil until that final day when the devil will be cast into hell.
5. God’s Spirit Directs
- As God’s children we are promised guidance and direction, individually and together as a church. (Romans 8:14)
- He deploys the saints into the work that He calls us to do (Acts 13:1-4)
- As a church we long to hear what the Spirit is saying in order to be obedient to the emphasis and season He has for us.
The work of the Spirit is invaluable as we seek direction and destiny for The Crossing Church.
